The Ignorance of Football Families

January 6th, 2012

If you didn’t see this on ESPN today, you need to see this. This family seems like they have NO idea what’s going on. Your son is the #1 player in the country and about to commit to the defending National Champions and contender for this season’s Championship. ESPN brings your entire family on T.V. for one of the biggest moments in your son’s career. What do you do?  Your family is from Louisiana and you want him to go there, so you make it all about yourself. This lady made a complete ass out of herself on national television.

Cotton Bowl Points and Prediction

January 6th, 2012

Arkansas (-9)  vs. Kansas State – O/U (63.5)

Arkansas lost two games this season – to Alabama and LSU. Those teams sound familiar? In fact, both of those games were road games.

Arkansas is averaging a 15th best 37.4 ppg while playing in the defensively formidable SEC. They dropped 44 on South Carolina – the 11th best defense in the nation.

Arkansas beat 7 good teams in a row without a hiccup before losing to LSU.

Kansas State is 105th in pass defense. Guess who likes to pass – Arkansas.

Arkansas is 80th in rushing defense while coming in 26th in pass defense. Kansas State is not adept in passing (109th) and really likes to run with QB Collin Klein, who has rushed the 7th most times out of any player in college football, and RB John Hubert.

Kansas State’s best win was at home over Baylor and their porous defense. Baylor turned the ball over 3 times and had 103 yards in penalties. I’m not sold.

Collin Klein has been sacked 36 times this season. Only 10 teams were sacked more.

Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson has completed 63% of his passes for 3422 yards, 22 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. The only Big 12 defense that Wilson faced, Texas A&M, has a comparable pass defense to Kansas State. Wilson passed for 510 yards and 3 TD’s on them.

Kansas State’s only two losses were to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. They were crushed by Oklahoma 58-17 (because Oklahoma plays defense) and lost narrowly to Oklahoma State (who doesn’t play defense) 52-45. Arkansas plays defense.

The Big 12 is 6-1 in bowls so far. Oklahoma State had possibly the only good victory out of all of them, beating Stanford in overtime. Iowa State lost to the mighty 8-4 Rutgers. Texas A&M beat a 6-6 Big 10 team (Northwestern). Texas beat a 6-6 Pac 12 team (Cal). Missouri beat a 6-6 ACC team (North Carolina). Oklahoma beat a 6-6 Big 10 team (Iowa). Baylor beat a 6-6 Pac 12 team (Washington). Who did the Big 12 play besides Stanford?

The SEC is 4-2 in bowls this year. Georgia lost to #17 Michigan State. Vanderbilt lost to 9-3 Cincinnati. South Carolina beat #20 Nebraska. Auburn beat 8-4 Virginia. Florida beat a 6-6 Ohio State team. Mississippi State beat 6-6 Wake Forest.

Kansas State runs the ball well. Arkansas plays in the SEC and has experience stopping the run. Arkansas loves to pass and Kansas State is inept at pass defense. Kansas State played two good defenses, Texas and Oklahoma, and only managed to score 17 points on each. This one has Arkansas written all over it.

Prediction – Arkansas 48 – Kansas State 20

PickArkansas (-9)

Random Friday Morning Thoughts

January 6th, 2012

If you missed the Heat/Hawks game on TNT last night, you missed a hell of a 3 overtime game. More interesting than the drama at the end: LeBron James and Dwayne Wade sat out with injuries. Chris Bosh took advantage of the added looks while dropping 33 points. Guess who dropped the game-tying 3-pointer to send it into overtime? If you guessed LeBron or Wade, you can’t read. Of course it was Bosh! Mario Chalmers, notably, had 13 points in overtime.

College basketball officials allowed 6 players to score the game-winning layup for Louisiana-Lafayette as they handed Western Kentucky their 11th loss of the season. If you thought, “Hey! There’s only supposed to be 5 people on the court!,” you are really good at this game! And, you could be a Sun Belt official.

Wisconsin RB Montee Ball, after being told he was a late 3rd round prospect, decided to remain a Badger for another year. With a first-year quarterback starting next year, Ball will certainly get the ball as much as he wants and try to improve his draft status. Somebody wants a Heeiiiiismaaan.

Ben Roethlisberger (does anyone try to spell that without googling it?) has been practicing with his bum ankle. It IS bothering him, but, with a playoff match-up against one of the all-time greatest quarterbacks, Tim Tebow, he needs to play. Center Maurkice Pouncey is unlikely to play.

Patriots’ Offensive Coordinator Bill O’Brien will be the next Pennsylvania State Head Coach. Looks weird, “Pennsylvania State,” doesn’t it? Spell it out, Lazy! Like Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University…. Ok, “Penn State” is fine. Does Bill Belichick ever get sick of losing his coordinators to head coaching jobs every year? Is he the “Head Coach of the New England Patriots” or a “Head Coaching Farmer?”

The Cotton Bowl is tonight at 8:00 on FOX. Arkansas and Kansas State meet in Arlington, Texas. We’ll have a preview for you sometime after lunch.
